Carsten Nicolai è un artista, musicista e produttore tedesco, nato nel 1965 a Karl-Marx-Stadt, nell’ex Germania dell’Est. Protagonista della scena creativa berlinese degli anni ’90, Nicolai è conosciuto internazionalmente per le sue installazioni e le sue performance che esplorano le connessioni tra visione, suono, architettura, scienza e tecnologia.   

Grazie a un approccio rigoroso che si ispira al metodo scientifico l’artista porta avanti una ricerca al tempo stesso coerente e poetica sui meccanismi della rappresentazione e sulle modalità e i limiti della percezione visiva e sonora. Le sue opere coinvolgono la fisicità dello spettatore e lo spazio architettonico per cui sono concepite, mettendo in gioco i concetti stessi di spazio e di tempo. 

unidisplay riunisce in sé i temi più importanti del lavoro di Nicolai: la capacità di rendere percepibile il suono in modo ottico; l'estetica minimale che si traduce nell’uso monotonale del colore (variazioni sul bianco e nero) e delle sonorità; la propensione verso l'astrazione e quella verso l'infinito.

Carsten Nicolai is a German artist, musician and producer born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now known as Chemnitz) in former East Germany. A leading figure on Berlin’s creative scene in the Nineties, Nicolai is internationally renowned for his installations and performances, which explore the connections linking vision, sound, architecture, science and technology.   
Thanks to a rigorous approach inspired by the scientific method, the artist has conducted his research – at once cogent and poetic – on the mechanisms of representation, and the procedures and limitations of visual and sound perception. His works involve the physicality of the spectator and the architectural space for which they are conceived, bringing into play the very concepts of time and space.

L'installazione site-specific I Sette Palazzi Celesti, realizzata per HangarBicocca nel 2004, è una delle più importanti opere dell'artista tedesco Anselm Kiefer e deve il suo nome ai Palazzi descritti nell'antico trattato ebraico Sefer Hechalot -- il "Libro dei Palazzi/Santuari" -- dove si narra il simbolico cammino d'iniziazione spirituale di colui che vuole arrivare al cospetto di Dio.

L'opera rappresenta il punto d'arrivo dell'intero lavoro dell'artista e sintetizza i suoi temi principali proiettandoli in una nuova dimensione fuori dal tempo: essi contengono infatti in sé l'interpretazione di un'antica religione (quella ebraica); la rappresentazione delle macerie dell'Occidente dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale; la proiezione in un futuro possibile da cui l'artista ci invita a guardare le rovine del nostro presente.

Le sette torri, del peso di 90 tonnellate ciascuna, hanno altezze variabili tra i 14 e i 18 metri e sono realizzate in cemento armato utilizzando come elementi costruttivi moduli angolari ottenuti dai container utilizzati per il trasporto delle merci. Il loro antecedente è il progetto de La Ribotte a Barjac nel sud della Francia, residenza dell'artista tra il 1993 e il 2007, composto di edifici, cunicoli e gallerie che si snodano su una vasta superficie nella campagna francese.

The Seven Heavenly Palaces

Anselm Kiefer (b. Donaueschingen, Germany, 1945) is one of the best known, most studied and most prolific artists of our time, symbol of an art that constantly reflects on the great historical and cultural questions of the present and the past. The history of Germany in the Nazi period and the general repression of that time is the starting point for all his work, which never ceases to question the role of a German artist after the Holocaust.  Kiefer never deals directly with the strict reality of history; rather, he looks for the religious, philosophical and symbolic elements at the origin of the events.
In 1984, following a visit to Jerusalem, Kiefer became interested in the Jewish mysticism of the Kabbalah, which was to become one of the recurring themes in his work. He also went on long journeys to Egypt, Yemen, Brazil, India and Central America and in search of the architectural remains of the vanished cultures he depicts in his work in a state of ruin: a symbol of the inevitable defeat of man’s ambition to rise to a superior, quasi-divine status. This interest culminated in La Ribaute, his project at Barjac in the south of France comprising buildings, underground passages and tunnels meandering across a vast area of French countrys
The Seven Heavenly Palaces Kiefer created for HangarBicocca in 2004, owe their name to the palaces described in the ancient Hebrew treatise Sefer Hechalot – the “Book of Palaces/Shrines” - which describes the symbolic path of spiritual initiation for those who want to come into the presence of God: the towers, varying in height from 14 to 18 metres, are made of reinforced concrete using corner modules from freight containers for the structure. Each tower is characterised by elements and materials that refer to Kiefer’s art imagery: the neon writing, the piles of books in lead, the ship, film, empty picture frames.
